5000 years ago.
I guess a volcano erupted on Kyushu and a lot of the people who lived there fled east across the Pacific to Chile, Valdivia to be exact. Once there they taught the natives how to make pottery and their cultures merged. This pottery is what sparked the investigation, since the people in Valdivia suddenly learned advanced pottery almost overnight, and all the techniques and designs they used were Japanese (Jomon). The people from Kyushu also brought a specific strain of a virus with them which has been DNA tested and confirmed to have come from the Kyushu area, this virus has been found in ancient Valdivia remains. Finally, the native people of the area today are clearly of Asian descent.
I believe that is the earliest confirmed discovery of America beyond the initial crossing of stone age people into the lands during the last ice age around 20k years ago.
Just saw that on the History Channel, thought it was awesome. I'd never heard of it before, but apparently the idea has been around since the '60s. The DNA testing and discovery of the virus are new though, so it might be in textbooks some day. |
